Driver nvidia kernel-2.6.16.4 não consigo instalar

Compilei o kernel 2.6.16.4 e tentei inumeras vezes instalar o nvidia-instaler todas sem sucesso. Segue abaixo o log do instalador.

Uso debian stable. Alguém pode ajudar?

Ta dizendo, que sua placa de video, "NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro" parece não ser suportada pelo driver....você tem que baixar o nvidia-legacy que suporta placas mais antigas....dá um procurada no site da nvidia....
Você postou o log aqui, mas chegou a ler ? ou não entende inglês ?

Pesquisando na internet descobri que o driver que tem suporte para minha placa. Baixei tentei instalar e como no primeiro não deu certo. Posto abaixo o log do instalador:

Tô . O kernel foi compilado por mim. Descarreguei o módulo rivafb e continua dando o mesmo erro.
Será que tem haver com o módulo que suporta placas agp nvidia compilado com o kernel ? Parece que a compilação para nesse modulo.
Vou ver se o kernel 2.6.7 tem esse módulo e comparar com o 2.6.16. Posto depois o resultado. No kernel 2.6.7 o driver instala.

Tente apenas remover o modulo "rivafb", na config do kernel. ta em Device drivers -----------> Graphics support . É uma lista com varios modulos, apenas remova o riva e recompile o kernel.

Se você quiser testar, tem como colocar o modulo "rivafb" no arquivo /etc/hotplug/blacklist , para que ele não seja carregado no boot. Dai reiniciar e tentar instalar o driver novamente. Não sei se vai dar certo, mas é alguma coisa mais rapida do que recompilar o kernel.

Eu não sei aonde que li sobre isso, acho que foi em tutorial para recompilar o kernel, que o cara indicar não usar esse modulo caso queira instalar o driver.

Pois bem.
Removi o driver rivafb e recompilei o kernel.

Tentei instalar o driver e, para minha decepção, continua dando erro.

Após isto removi todos os módulos nvidia do kernel e recompilei novamente. Sem sucesso outra vez, continua dando erro.

A sua distribuição não oferece um driver da nvidia pré-compilado ?
No primeiro Kernel 2.6.16 eu tive um problema parecido com esse, porém com o driver 8178.
Precisei aplicar o patch indicado nesse tópico.
Esse foi o patch aplicado ao driver.
O processo é simples até.
Na pasta onde baixei o driver:
$./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run --extract-only
Depois copiei o patch para a pasta NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1 (gerada após a extração dos arquivos do driver) e apliquei o patch:
$patch -p0
Depois, em modo texto, acessei a pasta e instalei o driver usando o nvidia-installer:
#./nvidia-installer
Lembrando que fiz isso usando o driver 8178.
Não sei se esse é o ideal para sua placa, em alguns locais eu vejo sendo indicado o driver 7174.
Aqui tem um patch recomendado para ele ser usado no kernel 2.6.16.x, se for usar substitua o nome do driver e do patch baixado nos comandos acima.
